St Albans Christmas Cracker, Sun 22 Nov, noon to 6pm: full main stage times, panto stars at 4.15pm, roads shut 6am to 9pm, free Santa's grotto in Civic Close.
The St Albans Christmas Cracker is on Sunday 22 November 2026, from noon until 6pm, in the city centre. It is run by St Albans City and District Council, it is free to attend, and it is the one day of the year the council shuts most of the central shopping streets to traffic.
That date is confirmed on two of the council’s own pages: the Enjoy St Albans event listing and the Events Trader Information page, which also says the Cracker is the only street event the council is running for the rest of 2026. The Spring Festival, on 17 May, was the other one.
Updated 3 October: the council has published the main stage running order, the road closure times (6am to 9pm) and the grotto’s location in Civic Close.
Everything below was checked against the council’s own published material on 3 October 2026.
Which roads close, and when
The council’s event listing, updated on 30 September, now gives the closure times. Under “Getting here” it says roads will be closed from 6am to 9pm in:
- St Peter’s Street
- High Street
- Chequer Street
- Victoria Street
- Civic Close
The location line on the same listing also names Market Place, which sits inside that area. That is three hours either side of the event itself, so plan any Sunday drive through the centre around the full 6am to 9pm window, not noon to 6pm.
The council asks people to walk, cycle or come by train: it puts St Albans City station a 12 minute walk away and St Albans Abbey a 16 minute walk. It says a bus diversion map “will be available shortly”, via Intalink. Hertfordshire County Council’s traffic notices carried nothing for the date when we checked.
If you are driving anywhere near the centre that Sunday, our roadworks and travel page tracks what else is shut across the district, including the A414 weekend closures at Park Street that divert eastbound traffic through the city.
Main stage running order
The main stage is near the taxi rank on St Peter’s Street. The council’s published times:
- 12:00 to 12:30 The Big Choir
- 12:45 to 13:00 Excel Performing Arts
- 13:15 to 13:35 Purple All Stars
- 13:50 to 14:10 St Albans Bollywood
- 14:30 to 15:10 The Ver Players
- 15:30 to 16:00 Grupi Artistik Londër
- 16:15 to 16:25 the Mayor of St Albans and this year’s panto stars
- 16:25 to 17:00 Ma Bessie Trio
- 17:20 to 18:00 Swanvesta Social Club
This year’s Alban Arena pantomime is Beauty and the Beast; our St Albans panto page has the cast and dates. The council does not name which cast members will appear.
What else is on
From the council’s listing and its draft site plan:
- About 100 market stalls, selling gifts, decorations, food and drink (the other Christmas markets, from the cathedral on 7 November to Christmas Eve, are on our St Albans Christmas markets page)
- School choirs around the Christmas tree in front of the Museum + Gallery, timetable to follow, with a British Sign Language interpreter for the whole event
- A free Santa’s grotto in Civic Close by the Alban Arena, sponsored by St Albans City Centre BID and staffed by Rotary volunteers, with optional donations to The Rotary
- Free Create and Play zones: a climbing wall and leaf crowns run by St Albans District Scouts, festive side show games, tree decorations, recycled festive tiles, wooden games, and a toddler soft play and colouring zone
- Street entertainment: St Albans Musical Theatre Company at the Clock Tower, a stilt-walking ice queen, a juggler, the Salvation Army Band and a Mix 92.6 live broadcast
- Fairground rides across the site, including a large Ferris wheel, and face painting, both charged
- Costa Coffee “Christmas Catch-Up” seating areas across the site
- A Community Zone of local charities alongside Barclays Bank
St Peter’s Church will be open, candlelit from 4pm, with carols from 4.30pm to 5pm and Evensong at 6pm.
Access
The council lists accessible viewing zones in front of the stages, priority seating for people who cannot stand for long, kerb ramps, accessible toilets and a Changing Places toilet (ask at the safe zone). A Community Safe Zone by the Civic Centre has seating, warmth and somewhere to breastfeed. Sighted guides can be booked in advance through the council on 01727 866100. BSL interpreters wear purple high-vis vests.
The lights question
Search results for St Albans Christmas lights will hand you dates from several different years, because the council’s older Cracker and switch-on news items have been unpublished and now return an access denied page.
Here is what the 2026 material actually says. The council’s own event listing tells visitors to “enjoy the festive lights” on the day, and the Cracker is described as the launch of the festive season. No separate lights switch-on ceremony, and no switch-on time, has been published for St Albans for 2026. The running order published at the end of September has no switch-on slot either. The closest thing is the Mayor and the panto stars on the main stage at 4.15pm, and the council does not describe that as a switch-on.
Harpenden is different: its town council publishes switch-on times, and they are on our Harpenden Christmas Carnival page.
Parking on the day
A Sunday is the cheap day to park in St Albans, which matters when five central roads are shut and everyone arrives by car.
- Most council car parks charge a flat £2.70 on Sundays and bank holidays
- Clarence Park, AL1 4NF, is free all day on Sundays, but it has only 31 spaces and closes at 6.30pm
- Drovers Way multi-storey, AL3 5EB, is the big one at 351 spaces. It is now ticketless entry and cashless payment only, so bring a card
- Civic Centre multi-storey, off Civic Close, AL1 3JS, has 117 spaces on the middle level and 74 in the basement, and sits directly behind the closed section of St Peter’s Street
- Russell Avenue and Drovers Way lifts run only between 8am and 6pm. If you need step-free access after 6pm, that rules both out for the end of the event
Full tariffs, disabled bay counts and PayByPhone codes for every car park are on our St Albans parking page.
If you want to trade
The council has already sent out all stall allocations for the 2026 Cracker. Anyone not yet allocated a pitch stays on a waiting list, and applications are still open for that list through the council’s online form. Traders need public liability insurance, a short risk assessment and a photograph of their pitch or products.
The pitch payment deadline was Wednesday 30 September. The council is not sending invoices: allocated traders were sent a reference number to pay online. Traders who want to be told when the 2027 application form opens can join the council’s mailing list from the same page.
What is still to come
- The school choirs’ timetable and the BSL schedule for the activities, both marked “to be confirmed”.
- The bus diversion map, promised on the event listing.
- A formal traffic order from Hertfordshire County Council for the closures.
Everything here was verified against the council’s own published material on 3 October 2026. Details change; check the council before you travel.
